i just ordered a short shifter off ebay & i dont know how to do it.. can someone walk me through it with pics mabye? do i need to drop trans? when i installed a hurst short shifter in my ranger it was four bolts holding it in.. was easy..this is my first car so idk what im getting into with this swap..thanx

no, it installs basically the same

i tried to swap it 2day got as far as trying to remove the damn bolt from shifter underneith. got the nut off but the bold wont come out...wtf? time ran short & had to put it all back togather b/c i had to be somewhere. i'll try it again some other time i guess..

It should just pop out if I remember correctly. I am doing a shifter in BossMan's car this weekend, so I will have a refresher.

it wouldnt pop out... it'll turn when i put a rachet on it to turn it but i tried pulling it out no luck, banging it out no luck, also i had to cut the heatshield bc the bolts were so rusted they would twist the brackets so i just cut the heat shield & bended it out of the way... then i used some self tapping screw to rig it back togather.. do i NEED the heat shields there or can i just remove them.. will they melt the shifter components? Also in gear my stock shifter will move from side to side in any gear... if i install new one will it do same? meaning should i also like replace something else wile im there?

I removed a section of the heat shield on both of my Escorts. My blue one has a pacesetter shifter, so it would hit the shield when I tried to shift. The green car has an eBay shifter. It was just easier to cut and remove a section. I haven't had any adverse effects from removing it.

good... i will cut it out... mabye it'll send more heat into the cab to help out with the no heat issue lol

we ended up having to reschedule. BossMan's flight was cancelled, so he didn't get home until the following day. I went over and noticed his car wasn't there, so I turned around and went back home. We'll probably work on it next weekend.

i went over to my dad's he got a ploebarn shop & wanted to di it in there but there was snow & ice infront of doors & even with shoveling i couldnt get doors open.. & the driveway was all snow & ice or i would of dun it on there. i'll try it again when the weather permits. its just that bolt on the shifter wont come off. mabye there is something from allowing to to come off? but i dodnt see anything. it'll turn so i know its not rusted on...& the heat sheild i tied up out the way is loose.. i hear it when shifting & wile in 5th...

well i finally swaped it out... also cut the heat sheild out the way. i think i need new shifter bushings? b/c it still moves side to side in gear... am i wrong on the bushings thing? throw is much better...

yeah, probably need the new bushings, unless the trans itself is the issue. The bushings only cost a few bucks from Ford, so I would definitely try that first.

it doesnt bother me that much wile driving so idk if i'll replace it or not...
